APS Mock Lecture: Understanding Difficult Pasts and Politics through Manga

This lecture looks at manga as a medium for shaping our memories of the past such as traumatic events, as well as our perceptions of social issues. By examining specific forms composed of images and verbal texts in different manga works, we will learn and discuss how manga may effectively contribute to constructing national identities.

Professor Kaori Yoshida
In her work, Kaori Yoshida, researches issues of gender, sexuality, and race in comparative cultural studies, popular culture, and memory studies. Her publications include “Mediating Otome in the Discourse of War Memory: Complexity of Memory-Making through Postwar Japanese War Films”, “Art as Peace Education at ‘Dark’ Museums and Sites in UK, Europe, and South East Asia”, and “Heritage Landscape of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.”

This session is for international undergraduate applicants.
Although it will be held in English, both English-basis and Japanese-basis applicants are welcome to attend!
